Biography |
The local Germans and Italians residents were detained by the government in power for 2 reasons: firstly on the request of Roosevelt citing Central American Countries as his “allies” and neighbours, and secondly it presented an opportunity to acquire property and companies by conviscating them. There is no direct reference as the when / how Ascoli was detained other than he was detained, with the others listed, in one of the 2 camps that existed in Nicaragua, Quinta Eitzen and Campo Marte
- Afterwards many of them (without saying which ones) were sent to detention camps in the USA, Camp Cristal City and Kennedy City. A large number of these detainees were then taken to Ellis Island and exchanged for American prisoners of war. He cites one example of Reidle who was exchanged and later died in an allied bombing raid and as a result his son and daughter returned to Germany never to be seen in Nicaragua again.
This part adds further information. After Pearl harbour, the USA asked all the South and Central American states to arrest Germans, Italians and Japanese residents and then send the to the USA. All conformed except for Argentina, Chile and Uruguay who just arrested them but did not deport. In the case mentioned (Kitzing) the person was sent to New Orleans and then to Camp Kennedy in Texas were there were 3.000 Germans and 2.000 Japanese detainees. The interesting thing is that those who wanted to go to Germany had to fill a form in before being taken to Ellis Island. So there must be records here and it wasn’t forced as he says the majority wanted to stay in the camp. In Feb 1944 the Red Cross boat left Ellis Island for Lisbon and then the detainees were taken by train to Germany.
