In 1935, there was a plebiscite on the fate of the Saar, and the result was
in favour of Germany (and against France).
Many Jews then left Saarbrücken, including the Hirschler family. First they went to Paris, until the Germans invaded Paris, then on to Lyon, and finally out into the
country near Lyon at Le Bois d’Oingt for the duration (this was where the Stradivarius reached them).
