Biography |
I left Chemnitz on April 1, 1933, boycott day, to Frankfurt and from there I went to Strasbourg arriving on April 3rd. I spent Pesach in Strasbourg plus an additional month. I stayed at Norbert and on Pesach I ate at Uncle Maurice.
Afterwards I went to Vienna, visiting relatives and then to Vacs in early 1934. My money ran out and so I gave lessons in English, German and French to earn money. Every half year I went to visit my parents in Brun.
I was registered at the University in Budapest. In 1937, moved to Vienna hoping to do a PHD. I met a brother of one of my students who had an import-export business. He convinced me to work with him as a bookkeeper and trader in their lumber business.
In 1938, Hitler invaded Austria, the boss was imprisoned and I was sleeping at Uncle Aaron who was a rabbi. At the same time, my brother was studying in Vienna. After being interrogated by the police I left Vienna for Brun, Czech Republic to visit my parents. On Yom Kippur 1938, the police came and told me that I have to leave Czech Republic as the Germans were closing in on Czech Republic.
We tried all the embassies for visas to no avail. A transport of illegal immigrants to Palestine was leaving in October 1938. We left from Pressburg by boat to Romania were we transferred to a tramp. I was in charge of the religious passengers, even made a cholent. It took us 6 weeks.
We arrived in Netanya on the 8th day of Hanuka. All went to Tel Aviv except 20 of us who went to Kfar Saba. I worked in the fields, till Pesach 1939. Erev Pesach I went to Jerusalem to my aunt (my father's sister). I met a girl in Kfar Saba who was a cook in a restaurant in Jerusalem. She suggested that I become a waiter and then I became manager.
In January 1941, I enlisted in the British Army. I volunteered as a commando but they put into administrative work. We went to Egypt and I became a clerk in the British Headquarters. Then we went up to Tobruk and were bombed day and night. After I was stationed at Army Headquarters in Cairo for a half a year.
My aunt was married to Esther's grandfather. We became engaged and married on Erev Pesach, on April 7th 1944. I was discharged as a warrant officer in April 1946. I worked at the Allenby barracks on Derech Hebron until 1947. I then joined the Palmach and was in the IDF until May 1949. After the IDF, I started working for the Jewish Agency and became the head cashier.
