| Biography |
Hella left Czech Republic in 1939 by chance. Hugo had a shiur on Shabbat and Hella was walking to the shiur with a congregant who told her that somebody had tickets to London, which were impossible to get. Hugo took the ticket Motzei Shabbat and left.
Hella decided to go to France. However, The French refused her a visa. So she went to the British consul as Hugo was already in England. She spoke French and they gave her one. She went back to the French and luckily they gave her a visa for ONLY a week.
Once in Strasbourg, her sister, Ruth told Hella to leave France and go to England. Moritz, her father, urged Hella to stay in France as nothing would happen!
At the border in Calais, with two small children Hella experienced problems to get through.
After WW2, the Stranskys moved to Melbourne. Hugo had to deal with the many problems of the Holocaust refugees etc. He fell ill from overwork.
In 1951, Hugo was appointed rabbi in Wellington, NZ where the workload was lighter. In 1956, became Rabbi at Congregation Beth Hillel in New York City.
On retiring in 1976, Hella and Hugo moved to Israel. [1] |
