Escaped from Germany in 1938 to New York with husband, daughter and mother. We arrived in NY in early July, 1938. The exact date escapes my memory - not that I was very aware of dates in 1938 - just that in 1968 my parents made their 1st trip to Germany & landed exactly 30 years to the day of their departure. Now I can't remember exactly except that it was the 1st days of July.
But I do have a record of our departure - June 29th - in my mother's German passport in which I am also included. Oddly enough the arrival in the US is not recorded - just a visa and a number of transit visas. The French consulate (Hamburg) transit visa is dated June 23rd & expiry date is June 30th - & permission to go ashore at Le Havre from the Manhattan is quite specific. My mother & I boarded the Manhattan in Hamburg. For some reason which I do not know - my father & grandmother went through France & boarded at Le Havre. So I conclude that they boarded the ship on the 30th - the fact that it was at night is vivid in my memory - I had been asleep & woke up to look out through the porthole when the ship docked. My mother did not go ashore probably because of the time of night.
Max Richter was our benefactor who saved us from Hitler - and many others as well. He was an American-Jewish businessman of German origin who was a good friend of my grandfather, Louis Eichenberg. According to stories my grandmother told me, the two men met on vacation at Baden Baden - actually there was another close friend of Louis' - Artur Hertz - who was also there. From that year until Louis died - well before WW 1 & after - they spent a time together each year at Baden Baden. Max Richter apparently sponsored about 150 persons to immigrate to the US - naturally the families of his friends were included. He was always helpful after our arrival in NY - lent my father money to allow my uncle Ernest to escape - lent him money to buy a business. And I remember that as a little girl when we were invited to visit his home - an elegant townhouse off 5th Ave. - he would take me for a ride on his stair "lift". [1] |
