Biography |
Lived in Osnabruck 1920-30 Paris, France 1930-33, London 1934, Oran 1936-48, Algiers 1948-71 Paris, France 1971-.
Michael apprenticed in the bag business and when he finished he was told he had the qualities to run a business. He moved to Strasbourg, as it had a Jewish community, to run a large bag business.
After a number of years he told his older brother, Maurice, to come to Strasbourg to join the business. They bought land outside of Strasbourg for their business.
My father became a German citizen when he moved to Strasbourg. He received a Croix de Guerre from Germany. In 1918, we moved to Osnabruk as Rosy's mother lived there and she was old. They lived in a nice big house in the center of town. Eve went to school till 1930. Because of the unemployment and high inflation Eve decided to move away as she wanted to learn French and English. She went to Paris, France and worked as a secretary for two years after which she wanted to learn English.
Eve's friend in London advised her not to come as French girls were received as prostitutes. However, another friend simply told her to come to England. She worked in a boarding school in Brighton which allowed her the opportunity to learn English. After a year Eve returned to Paris, France.
With her English she was able to get very good jobs. At the same time, Eri came to Paris, France, where they lived together until they both married in 1936. Had Eri not come Eve would have gone to study other languages in the respective countries. In 1930, she stayed at a house called Toit Famille, a pension for young girls. It exists till today. There she met a girl from Oran Algeria. They stayed friends and used to see each other when she came to Paris, France from Oran. One day she wrote that a friend was coming to Paris, France to finish his studies. That's how she met her husband.
After their marriage they moved to Oran where they stayed till 1946, when they moved to Algiers. Rosy came in 1938 to Oran. Eri met a German dentist. When he could no longer practice because of the Nazis they both moved to Israel, where they married in 1936. Secratarial work paid very little in Algiers. Furthermore she had a very large house and full of X-Ray equipment. She tried to find a doctor who would run a clinic and she work as the secretary. She found no one in Algiers or in France.
She sold most of the equipment and took in young girls as boarders which gave her much more income. A friend suggested that she become a midwife. Because she was born in Strasbourg, the university accepted her German degree, thus she wouldn't need to do a French degree. She then studied and became a midwife. At first she would go by car when called.
Later when childbirth was covered by the government including a stay in a clinic, she transformed her house into a 8 room clinic. Somehow, maybe because the clinic was small, the OAS didn't exact any protection money from her as they did from everyone else. Luckily she had no trouble with either the French or the Arabs.
After 1962, everyone left but Eve wanted to stay in spite of the pleadings of her children and mother. She went to Paris, France for a few months. Her former staff wrote her and asked her to return, which she did. In 1971, the Dep't of Health showed up one day and closed the clinic.
Asking no questions, she left the next day, leaving everything behind. She was able to get into the airport with the help of a client and managed to get a ticket on an Air France flight. She rented an apartment and her mother joined her. Later she bought an apartment. She worked as a substitute for various mid-wife clinics which she found enjoyable as she had no responsibilities and the pay was very good. At age 65, she retired [1] |
