Photo of the gravesite marker of Leopold Davids at Diemen Cemetery, taken in 1947 when it was unveiled by his son Paul Davids (my biological uncle who adopted me into his family shortly afterwards and took me with him to his home in South Africa). Leopold died at Westerbork at age 70, probsbly from kidney failure, as we were given to believe that he was receiving dialysis treatment while residing in Gouda. He was cremated in Westerbork, courtesy of the Nazi instructions to the Judenrat.
With special Rabbinical permission, Leopold's ashes, in an urn at Westerbork, were retrieved by the Red Cross and given to Paul for burial. Since Julie died in Sobibor, as did two of her and Leopold's children and their spouses, they have no grave, so Paul ensured that their names were included on the memorial inscription. Martha Neuhaus-Davids and Artur Neuhaus were survived by their only child, my cousin Marian, who was hidden in Holland and was adopted by one of Artur's surviving brothers in New York. [1] |
