As the owner of the house at 3A, Keplerstrasse, Dora Spier was obliged, under the rental laws for Jews, to declare her housing status. On 1st September 1939 she wrote to the Housing Office: “The house at 3A, Litzmannstrasse [today Keplerstrasse, author’s note] is registered in my name. Formerly we occupied it on our own, till we were forced by the times to take in tenants. There are four families in the house… I occupy the first floor and have two rooms and a small kitchen, while Mrs Pauson has recently been living in the two large rooms… I am a Jewess, but suffer from a severe heart condition, otherwise I would have moved to my daughter in Palestine a long time ago.”
In April 1942 Dora Spier had to leave her house and move into the “Jews’ House” at 26, Wender Landstrasse. One moth before that numerous Göttingen Jews, among them some of her former tenants, had been deported to the East. On 21st July 1942 Dora Spier along with the other residents of the house at 26, Wender Landstrasse were carried off. The transport first went to the assembly camp Hanover-Ahlem and was supposed to continue from there two days later to Theresienstadt. On 23rd July 1942, the day the transport was to depart for the Theresienstadt Ghetto, Dora Spier committed suicide.
Gertrud Spier, the one daughter, had emigrated to Palestine in 1927. The other daughter, Frieda, who had been living in Berlin since 1929, perished with her family in the Auschwitz extermination camp. [1] |
