Biography |
From April 1932 to July 1933, 1 went to school in Hamburg. When my parents moved to Morocco, I went to a French school in Casablanca from October 1933 until May 1935, and then to a Spanish primary school In Tetuan, where I graduated in June 1937.
When we arrived In Tangier I went to a French Lycee and obtained the French Baccalaureate of Philosophy in 1945. After the death of my father in 1941, I helped my mother In her business. My mother encouraged me to go to the United States in May 1949 (I had been Sponsored by Onkel Ernst Grafenberg). Besides some part time employment, I was a buying agent for my mother and her customers. When the Korean War started, I was drafted into the US Army in February 1951. I was sent to Germany where I first served as a supply clerk in an infantry company and then as an interpreter at US Army Headquarters in Stuttgart.
After being released from the Army in Feb. 1953, I returned to New York to resume my activities there. I returned to Tangier in June 1955 when my mother became very sick and later died. I got married to Alia in 1957. She was a very spiritual woman, who at times suffered from depression, but on the other hand wrote beautiful poetry in French. She died of a stroke In 1987.
Our son James was born in 1958. When Tangier lost its status as an International Zone and was integrated into Morocco in 1960, we left for New York. There I continued purchasing for my Jewish customers In Morocco, but most of them left after the Six Day War. In 1968, I joined Dicker International. Leo Dicker and his wife were killed in 1974 in the TWA plane crash over Greece which was caused by a terrorist bomb. Together with a partner, we purchased the business. After my partner had a heart attack in 1992, I continued the business, but reduced it considerably in 1995, keeping just a showroom in New York and working from my home. My life time hobby is stamp collecting.
Submitted all his papers to Leo Baeck.
John (Hans Ulrich) Stern worked with his father in Tangier from 1945 to 1949, when he immigrated to the United States. He married Alia Azancot in 1957. The couple had one child, James. John Stern became the executive vice president of a toy import-export company. He also served as the president of the American Friends of the Jewish Communities of Northern Morocco and Tangier in Rego Park, New York and as trustee of the Rego Park Jewish Center
