Biography |
Changed name from Halberstadt in early 1938 by an order of the Supreme Court of the State of New York. My grandfather Julius Halberstadt ( and later my father) was very involved in food retail stores, and eventually wound up owning a company called Schade and Fullgrabe, a large Jewish grocery store chain, that at its peak, before World War II, had approximately 144 stores all over Germany.
The chain was founded in 1878, and sold to the Halberstadt family, specifically Joseph H., in 1887. Joseph was my father's grandfather. Julius continued to be very involved in food retail his whole life, though his work in the US was nowhere near as extensive. He died, relatively young, in 1939.
My grandparents were exceptionally kind, generous and warm people. My grandmother was famous for her hostessing and fabulous meals that she cooked up. I grew up just 10 min. away from them and spent many weekends, holidays, etc. at their home. My mother carried on the great hostessing tradition and was really very gifted in this area. She was a charming, elegant and classy woman.

An interesting part of my father's life is that after he and his parents sailed to New York in `36, they stayed here only a few days, as they
were only on a visitor's visa.
In order to obtain an immigration visa, they all had to leave the country, and thus went to Bermuda for 3 days, obtained an immigration visa from the consulate there, (my grandfather apparently had connections in the Bermuda consulate), and then could legally return to the U.S. as immigrants.
This whole thing was due to the quotas and other American bureaucratic demands of FDR, who as you know, was not very sympathetic to the plight of Jews. [2] |
