Biography |
My grandmother, Friedel (Grafenberg) Halberstadt was a very colorful person during the 1st half of her life. She was very beautiful, loved to dress up in exotic "costumes," and I guess was often the life of the party.
Her real claim to fame, though, was that she was the first woman in Frankfurt to have a driver's license and drove all over in her red convertible NSU, comparable to today's BMW. She was the founder of FDAC, the Frankfurter Damen Auto Club.
All her life, she maintained a great interest in cars, though she became decidedly more dour as she aged, especially after her husband died.
My grandparents were exceptionally kind, generous and warm
people. My grandmother was famous for her hostessing and fabulous
meals that she cooked up. I grew up just 10 min. away from them and
spent many weekends, holidays, etc. at their home. My mother carried
on the great hostessing tradition and was really very gifted in this
area. She was a charming, elegant and classy woman.

An interesting part of my father's life is that after he and his parents
sailed to New York in `36, they stayed here only a few days, as they
were only on a visitor's visa.
In order to obtain an immigration visa, they all had to leave the country, and thus went to Bermuda for 3 days, obtained an immigration visa from the consulate there, (my grandfather apparently had connections in the Bermuda consulate), and
then could legally return to the U.S. as immigrants.
This whole thing was due to the quotas and other American bureaucratic demands of FDR, who as you know, was not very sympathetic to the plight of Jews. |
