That Jews had to obtain official permission for the most harmless of meetings is demonstrated by a letter from Berthold Hoexter to the Political Police in January 1938. He was asking permission to hold a social evening (Preiskatabend) with other members of the Jewish community in the Community Center.
In January 1939 Berthold Hoexter and his wife reported their move to Rotterdam. During the war the couple were deported from Amsterdam to the extermination camp at Auschwitz. Both lost their lives there.
Berthold Hoexter’s daughter Margot and her husband were able to find refuge in the USA. [1] |
