Biography Joseph Jaffe moved to Worms from Lorsch on 1 Dec 1915. He worked as a textile merchant (clothing and drapery trader) without having a shop. On 16 Aug 1931 the family moved to the Hätzerstraße 27, and on 13 July 1932 to the Pfauentorstraße 5.

On 27 July 1932 the husband moves away to an address. In 1933 it seems that he has moved to Memel*

The wife and 3 children remained in Worms in the Römerstraße 76, and then as from 4 Sep 1933 in the Lützow (now Bensheimer)-Straße 20. The mother and children are registered as having left Worms on 12 May 1934, destined for Memel, probably because the husband was already there.

Although the actual circumstances are , the parents and children perished under the Nazi persecution. Their names appear on the holocaust victims memorial on the wall in the Jewish synagogue in Worms along with other Jewish residents of the city.

*Note by Sylvia 22 September 2006:
Memel was the German name for what is now Klaipeda Lithuania. Under the Treaty of Versailles after the 1st World War, the Memel region was taken from Germany and put under international jurisdiction with the protectorate responsibility given to France with the aim for it to become a free area along the model of Danzig. After a Lithuanian invasion in 1923 assisted apparently by the Germans, France ceded the area to the state of Lithuania and at the time of the Jaffes' emigration, Memel was officially Lithuanian but the German inhabitants (approx. 60% of the population) were granted limited autonomy. However, by 1934-8 the Lithuanians illegally started repressing the German population. In 1939 after pressure put on Lithuania by the German authorities, the Memel region was handed back to Germany. After the 2nd World War, the territory was returned to Lithuania, which was by then a state within the USSR. Probably Memel was considered as a “safe haven” for Jews in 1934.  [1
