Biography Through contact with other genealogy researchers I have information on a
Joseph Ascoli born in Hamburg in 1821, who appears to be my greatgrandfather
but I do not have definite proof, having not been able to locate any
certificates overseas to match his signature with the Australilan documents.
My genealogy friends (Gina and Jan) told me this Joseph Ascoli "was sent by
his father in 1838 to Paris, London and Amsterdam. Got into bad company and
was locked up in "Festung Werden". Returned in 1849 but could not make a go
of it and in 1858 started work on the emigrant ship "Victoria" and left the
ship in 1859 in some port and was never heard of again."

From my research I've found out that the "Victoria" arrived in Port Adelaide
in 1858 and the first Ascoli born in Australia was Lydia Ascoli in 1859 in
the Adeliade Hills. Lydia's mother was Louise Martini who was a passenger on
the "Victoria", her father was Frederick (later known as Francis, Joseph,
Francois etc) AscoLI, Fredercik probably was a deserter but I have not
located records to prove this yet. Lydia was a step-sister to my grandfather
