Biography |
Founded Jaffe Brothers with brother Isaac. Company operated in Belfast, Dundee, Hamburg & Leipzig, Germany. Transferred his business from Hamburg in 1845 Daniel was the founding father of the Belfast Jewish community. He first visited Belfast in 1845 to buy linen for his mercantile house. At the time, Belfast was home to over 80% of Ireland's spindles and 70% of its power looms. Advised to open a linen house in the city to export to the Continent, Daniel began trading in Belfast five years later. His success soon brought more German Jewish merchants to town in search of business opportunities. The first official Jewish service was held in Belfast in 1864, at the home of Daniel's eldest son, Martin. When the foundation stone for the community's first synagogue was laid, there were only 55 Jews. The year was 1871. Daniel died in 1874 and was buried in the Falls Road City Cemetery in Belfast, the resting place of some one hundred Jews buried before the community established its own cemetery. Strangely, they ware buried in a nondescript corner of the courtyard along some of Belfast's most infamous Catholic and Protestant martyrs-those "killed in action". In 1904, Otto, Daniel's fifth and youngest son, decided to build a synagogue. It was his charisma-as well as his generous down payment-that prevented a schism between the original German community of wealthy merchants and the Lithuanian newcomers who had arrived after the 1881 Czarist pogroms. |
