He was an apprentice for 1 year with Gebrüder Robinsohn, an export wholesale metal business
Then he was a clerk for a year with the company Alexander Rosenau in Berlin, Germany, a wholesale silk business.
He then entered his father's business of Seligsohn & Mendelson successors, and was made a partner on 1 January 1920.
He was a soldier for 3 years during World War I. As from Feb 1915 he was in the 31st regiment in Altona, working in the complaints department. A year later he was promoted to Corporal, then Acting Warrant Officer. I
n 1930 the business of Seligsohn & Mendelson successors failed, but was carried on under another name “Hatrik”. He was later also with the company H. Heyman.
As a child he was interested in music and played the cello. He was a member of the Altona orchestral club. He was also interested in antiques, art, handicrafts, North German faience, fine and decorative arts - furniture, embroidery - but also modern art. He started collecting at a young age. He was a member of a reading club, and liked riding. He didn't enjoy dancing. He drove an Essex car. They had musical and lecture evenings at home in the Obere Str. with 50 - 70 guests.
At the time of the engagement 18 September 1918 he was living at Hartungstr. 12 in Hamburg. The honeymoon started from the Hotel Atlantic in Hamburg and went on via Hannover, Darmstadt and Frankfurt to Heidelberg. Because of lack of coal, the trains stopped and they returned from Heidelberg/Neckargemünd to their flat in Hamburg - Abendsrothweg 36 on the ground floor. In 1922 they moved to the Oberstr. 2 ground floor, and in 1926 they had a house built as a summer residence in Volksdorf. Due to financial constraints in 1931 they had to move from the Obere Str. to Fühlsbütteler Str. 677. Around the same time the house in Volksdorf was sold on the advice of the Minden family, which Otto always regretted apparently.
An article by him called “Gründe des Antisemitismus” (causes of anti-semitism) was published in a book called “Gedanken” (thoughts)
In July 1940 he experienced the Italian Air Force attack on Haifa. [1, 2] |
