Hans Barnass resigned from the Jewish community in 1925. In Göttingen he managed a warehouse which belonged to the Adelebsen paint business of his father-in-law Julius Polak. In 1940/1941, quite some time after he had had to give up the warehouse, he was employed by the large Göttingen horticultural enterprise of Hermann Starke. Finally, from 3rd June 1941 to 20th March 1942 he worked as a laborer in the so-called Jews’ Column of the civil engineering firm August Drege. This forced labor column was employed for removing the damage caused to the river banks and the dam during the flooding of the River Leine on 4/5th November 1940.
On 26th March 1942, a few days after disbandment of the “Jews’ column”, Hans Barnass was deported together with his mother, his wife and both his daughters, aged 8 and 10, along with a number of other Göttingen Jews. Via the assembly camp at Hanover-Ahlem and the transit camp of Travniki near Lublin he reached the Warsaw Ghetto. He is considered as missing there, and after the war, was declared deceased. |
