Information from the Mannheim archives on the:
GOLDSCHMIDT FAMILY
Max Goldschmidt, banker, born 24 Jan 1865 in Mainbernheim,/Kitzingen, died 31 May 1926 in Mannheim
His wife Johanna Goldschmidt née Staadecker, born 7 July 1878 in Mannheim, died 5 Oct 1940 in Seattle, Washington State USA. Marriage 5 August 1897 in Mannheim
2 daughters:
Rosa Goldschmidt born 24 July 1898 in Mannheim
Ella Goldschmidt born 28 Nov 1902 in Mannheim, married name Newton, lived later in Seattle USA.
The Mannheim registers show Rosa Goldschmidt as moving to Munich on 24 Sep (month not completely legible) 1917. Back in Mannheim from 10 Feb to 18 April 1918 and living at no. 38 Otto-Beck.Str. Afterwards again departure for Munich and return to Mannheim
8 Feb and July 1919 living again in the Otto-Beck-Str.no. 38 Leaves Mannheim again on 27 June 1925, but not legible where she moves to.
There is a later remark that Rosa, as Gräfin (Countess) Waldeck was living in Paris, probably around 1961.
There is a book called “Geschichte der Juden in Mannheim 1650-1945” (History of the Jews in Mannheim 1650-1945) with biographies of 52 persons by Karl Otto Watzinger. This book briefly mentions the Marx and Goldschmidt Bank in Mannheim:
The bank was founded in 1894 by Marx and Goldschmidt (1863 – 1926 – note by Sylvia: the 1863 birth year actually conflicts with what is show in the register, and is probably in error). From 1914 to 1923 Max Goldschmidt was leader of the Jewish community. The bank remained independent until 1933, but had to give up then due to the political situation.
Max Goldschmidt was also a member of the Mannheim stock exchange, a member of the synagogue council and a member of the Jewish council.

ROSIE WALDECK FROM WIKIPEDIA
R.G. Waldeck (August 24, 1898[1] – August 8, 1982[2]) born Rosa Goldschmidt, also known as Rosie Waldeck and by several other variants of her name, was the author of several works including Prelude to the Past; the autobiography of a woman and Athene Palace.[3] The former narrates, among other things, the 1930 spy trial involving Berlin, Germany publisher Ullstein-Verlag (she was married at the time to Dr. Ullstein); the latter narrates events in elite diplomatic circles in Bucharest, Romania during World War II.[4]
Waldeck was a German-born Jew, who later became a Catholic and (on April 3, 1939) an American.[5][6] She was born into a banking family, and in 1920 received a doctorate in sociology from the University of Heidelberg, where she studied under Alfred Weber. From the 1930s, she was based in the United States. She was in Bucharest from June 1940 to January 1941 as a correspondent for Newsweek:[7] her book Athene Palace narrates this sojourn; the title refers to the Athénée Palace hotel, "shorn of one 'e' and of accents for no other reason than simplicity and readability."[8]
The surname Waldeck came from a German count,[4] who was at least her third husband. She was earlier married to German-born medical doctor and scientist Ernst Gräfenberg[9] and to the aforementioned Dr. Ullstein.

Synopsis
As European capitals fell during 1940 and 1941, there swarmed to the Athene Palace, Bucharest's Grand Hotel, diplomats, generals, Gestapo spies, and demi-mondaines from all over Europe. Arriving at the crowded Athene Palace on the day Paris fell in 1940, the American woman journalist Rosa Goldschmidt Waldeck watched for the seven months following all the events and the international figures that made Romania Europe's last sensational hotbed of intrigue and colour. Here you see Hitler's beautiful feminine agents holding court in the Athene Palace lobby within eyeshot of British diplomats, while around them move fifth columnists, German economists and generals, American and English diplomats and newspapermen, who made the Athene Palace the most glamourous spot on the Continent. The dramatic events of this turbulent period in history are described here chiefly in terms of personalities: Carol and Lupescu, Antonescu and Dr. Clodius, Nazi Gauleiters, British Quislings, Romanian appeasers, and all the types who dominated the scene of World War II Europe...on the surface this is a fast-moving, dramatic book, as readable as a novel, but it is at the same time a most effective dissection of This new edition of this classic work, originally published during the Second World War, is accompanied by an introductory study of the author's life and work by Ernest H Latham J |
