Biography Both my parents were active in the community, elected to our local town council where they served for many years, and my mother particularly did an enormous amount charitable work.

Margot and her sisters spent their formative years in a place called Schweitzer Reinecke, in what was then the Eastern Transvaal province. Albert Stern, their father, was a farmer, who came from the Fulda area in Germany.

The marriage didn't last too long, and Martha  returned with the girls to Germany where they spent the First World War years. Martha later married Victor Gudenberg. They  had a son, Ulrich, who died tragically, aged sixteen. He dived into a pool and hit his head on the floor. There has been some suggestion that, being half Jewish, harassment from the Nazis led him to inflict this on himself. Martha never got over their loss, and said that she only lived half a life after this incident.

Albert Stern got custody of the three sisters and they returned to South Africa when the first war ended. He too remarried, and the three girls had a miserable childhood with a stepmother who showed no affection for them at all.

Margot left Jacobsdalas a young girl and finished her schooling in Johannesburgat Parktown convent. She then trained as a secretary and worked for many years as such. When she married George, she was working for the Amolis Brothers at Wholesale Coal. She was earning 18 pounds sterling a month, an excellent salary at the time. She was very efficient. She also supplemented the family income by knitting items for shops to sell. During her spells as Mayoress of Edenvale, her priority was to establish an Old Age Home in the town. This she eventually achieved, partially by setting aside her and George's honorarium as Mayor and Mayoress, as well as the usual fund raising events. Margot's baked cheese cake was legend, and when she died of Cancer at age 70, the recipe died with her.  [1
